Need a hand adjusting to remote teaching?

TLS recently hosted webinars to help instructors navigate remote teaching, with a focus on promoting student engagement and keeping things manageable for everyone. If you missed them, you can watch the webinar recordings and download accompanying slides on this page.

Stay tuned—Focus on Teaching and the TLS Events page will soon have information about upcoming May support offerings.

Tips for Teaching Remotely

Help students feel connected

Send students a welcome email before the start of the term to set a positive tone. Explain how to best navigate the remote environment, and how you will help them succeed. Click here for a template (look for the "Welcome email" tab).

Spread out assessments to reduce student stress

Instead of one or two high-stakes exams, plan for a number of small, low-stakes assessments throughout the course to help students get accustomed to being assessed remotely and minimize consequences in case of technical difficulties. See example evaluation schemes here.

For Your Students

Lunch with the Dean of GPS for Graduate Students

Every Friday at 12:00pm

Let your graduate students know that GPS is organizing a virtual lunch-time discussion series for graduate students and postdocs who would like to connect, share concerns, and exchange ideas.

Student Wellness Hub is Offering Services Online

The Student Wellness Hub has moved online and is offering students group sessions and timely one-on-one telehealth appointments with a nurse, mental health clinician (Local Wellness Advisor), or psychiatrist (with referral) at this time.

Resources & Announcements

Prepare your teaching portfolio

To get started on writing about your teaching approach, reflect on your teaching and learning experiences. This can help you describe how your beliefs and values inform your teaching methods. More information and sample McGill portfolios are here.

Millions of (e)books at your fingertips

The McGill Library recently announced a service in collaboration with HathiTrust that provides remote access to over half of McGill’s print collection. These resources will help continue to support teaching and research while we are physically distancing to protect the health of our community.

Staying Connected

Even though we’re apart, our community is as strong as ever. We are staying connected wherever we are in the world. Please help share this inspiring new video from students and staff at McGill. Stay positive – we’ll get through this together.

Looking for information on revised grading and assessment policies for Winter 2020?

See the Adjusted Academic Measures page: “Rather than determine a singular way forward, the possible adjustments take into account the complexities our students face, and are presented as a basket of options so that each student can be empowered to make choices that fit their unique situation.”
