Clarifying Expectations in Graduate Supervision

Imagine preventing common mistakes when taking on new graduate students. Clarifying Expectations is about articulating roles and responsibilities in supervisory relationships before miscommunication occurs. In this workshop, we will discuss existing Letters of Understanding, work together to set goals, and focus on writing a letter that suits your needs. Bring your lunch. myCourses Tip: Exporting Grades From myCourses to a Spreadsheet

If you would like to enter grades on spreadsheet outside of myCourses, it is recommended to set up your grade items in myCourses and then export your grade book. The exported grade book file will have the required formatting, thus facilitating the importing of grades into myCourses.


Adding Readings to myCourses

The Library can help you make course readings available to your students at no cost with myCourses. It’s easy to link to the Library’s millions of articles and ebooks or to scan and upload books and articles directly to myCourses. Click here for more information, or email


Helping Students in Difficulty

Course instructors sometimes come across students experiencing difficulties, and helping these students can be challenging. If there is concern for the safety or well-being of a student, the Helping Students in Difficulty folder is a guide for what to do and whom to contact in emergencies, crises, and worrisome or difficult situations.

Engage your Students in Class with Online Polling

Are you interested in using Polling @ McGill to engage your students in class? This tool allows instructors to ask their students questions in class, who respond using their personal phone, tablet, or laptop. In this workshop, you will learn about different strategies to engage your students using polling, with a focus on how to design effective polling questions.


Feedback Strategies: Engaging Students in Dialogue

Providing feedback to undergraduate students on their writing assignments can be a complex, time-consuming and thankless task. This workshop focuses on feedback strategies for essays and research (term) papers that engage students with feedback and encourage them to take greater responsibility for their learning before, during, and after assignments.

Course Evaluations Open for Fall 2017

Students may complete their Mercury course evaluations from now until December 23 (December 7 for units following the condensed period). Strategies to encourage student participation include:

  • Communicating the value of course evaluations;
  • Making announcements and reminding your students; and
  • Allowing students time in class to complete their course evaluations.

Early Alert

Instructors sometimes notice a student who exhibits unexpected behaviours, such as frequent and unexplained absences, deteriorating academic performance, or uncharacteristic expressions of emotion. While some instructors reach out directly to help students, an alternative is to click on the “Early Alert” widget in myCourses.
