Writing Effective Reference Letters for Student Fellowships

Professors are often asked to write letters of reference by students applying for awards and employment. While time-consuming and sometimes difficult,   a strong reference letter can change the outcome of an application. This workshop will help you write effective letters for all situations, and even handle unreasonable requests.

What the research says…

As fellowship season nears, it is likely that you will be invited to write letters of recommendation for your students. What approach do you usually take to drafting such letters? In this recent article, Master (2016) suggests co-drafting the letter of recommendation with your supervisee, as one approach that can lead to compelling, accurate letters while also being a site of mentorship and an opportunity for self-reflection for both supervisor and supervisee. 


Understanding Discrimination: Frameworks and First Steps

September 21, 2:00-4:30pm or September 23, 9:30am-12:00pm
Designed specifically for the McGill context, this workshop will expose participants to a number of concepts related to equity and discrimination. During this session, participants will examine ways that unconscious or unintended bias can work its way into everyday interactions.

myCourses Tip: Content Descriptions

When uploading content, you are able to add descriptions to your files. Descriptions can help focus student learning and serve as a study aid. Use descriptions to provide information on what the content items contain, include guiding questions, and indicate areas to which students should pay particular attention. Request a consultation to learn more about myCourses and other educational technologies.


Access to WebCT

The legacy LMS (WebCT) is being phased out. For instructors who wish to access content from a WebCT course for use in the new myCourses system, please submit the WebCT Migration Request form.

Polling@McGill: Upgrade to TurningPoint Cloud

This system is now available at no charge to students and instructors and allows students to respond to questions from a personal device (smartphone, tablet, laptop) rather than a physical handheld clicker. Physical clickers will no longer be supported for in-class uses. Sign up to use TurningPoint Cloud.  


Support Student Writing: Courses, Workshops, Tutorials

Concerned about the quality of your students’ written work? Spending too much time wading through unclear ideas or poor grammar? Help your students improve their academic writing skills by referring them to the McGill Writing Centre’s courses, workshops, and tutorial service. These services are available to both graduate and undergraduate students.
