Bard at the Library

Bard on the Beach Artistic Director, Christopher Gaze presents a sneak preview of this year’s plays, including A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Tempest, Equivocation and Cymbeline.


 

Authors in our Community – Flying Duchesses
Wednesday, April 30, 7 p.m.

Patricia McCuaig has woven her father's letters and diaries into an intriguing biography that brings to life the story of his adventures flying a Grumman Goose in Canada from 1964 – 65 for England's Duke of Westminster and his family.

Monday Movie Night – About Time
Monday, April 7, 6:30 p.m.

A delightful romantic comedy about time travel from the screenwriter of Love Actually.

Opera with Nicolas Krusek – French Opera
Wednesdays, April 2 and 16, 12:30 p.m.

Highlights of this series will include Faust by Gounod, Carmen by Bizet, and Manon by Massenet.


 

Music in Hollywood with Michael Conway Baker
Thursdays, April 3, May 8 and June 5, 10:30 a.m.

Join local award-winning composer Michael Conway Baker for this entertaining series on music for the movies. Each presentation includes a live performance by a special guest musician.

Philosophers' Cafe – Are we Parasites?

Are humans paramount or simply parasites? Join this conversation in honour of Earth Day. This session will be held on the 4th Friday of the month due to the Easter holidays.

Surf Scoters in a Changing Sea

Dr. Eric M. Anderson will present his research on surf scoters, addressing the conservation issues facing this sea duck and marine birds along the Pacific Coast. Presented in partnership with the Lighthouse Park Preservation Society.

Kids

Book Buddies | 6 – 12Y
Tuesdays, April 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29, 3:45 p.m.

Children will play literacy games and practice their reading skills with teen volunteers. Kids must be school-aged and able to read some English on their own in order to register for the program. Snacks will be provided. Registration is required. Online registration begins Monday, March 3. Please register each child separately.
 

Easy as Pi! – Introduction to Computer Programming | 9 – 12Y
Tuesdays, May 6, 13, 20 and 27, 3:30 p.m.

Kids will enjoy learning about computer programming using the Raspberry Pi and creating their own computer games and projects from scratch. Registration is required. Online registration begins at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 7. Please register each child separately. Registrants must attend all sessions.
 

Paws 4 Stories | 6 – 12Y
Wednesdays, May 7, 14 and 21, 4 p.m.

Kids with reading challenges can spend 20 minutes a week reading with a certified Paws 4 Stories therapy dog. Registration is now open. Please call the Youth Department at 604.925.7408.

During the Easter holidays, the Library will be open on Saturday, April 19, but will close on April 18, 20 and 21. Happy Easter everyone!
 
Beyond the Stacks

North Shore Writers Festival
Friday, April 11 and Saturday, April 12


The North Shore Writers Festival celebrates Canadian authors, including Grant Lawrence, Vincent Lam and many more! There's a quiz show, seminars and the chance to mingle with prominent names on the Canadian literary scene. This year, the festivities are happening at North Vancouver City Library.
 

Adopt-a-Fish
and Storytime

On April 26, pick up your Salmon Release Certificate at the Library and then head to Memorial Park at 11 a.m. to release a baby Coho Salmon (called a smolt) into the wild! At 11:30 a.m., join us under the big white tent for a special outdoor fish-themed Storytime in the park! In case of rain, Storytime will be held in the Storyhouse at the Library. 

Library Family Nominated

West Vancouver Memorial Library Board trustee Geoff Jopson and Foundation director Jo-Ann Wood have been nominated as Citizens of the Year by the West Vancouver Chamber of Commerce. The winner will be announced at the Chamber's President's Dinner and Business Excellence Awards on April 23.
