Readings in the Park — 
Cea Sunrise Person

Tuesday, August 8, 4 – 5 p.m., John Lawson Park

 

Join national bestselling author Cea Sunrise Person as she discusses her new memoir, Nearly Normal: Surviving the Wilderness, My Family and Myself. As part of the Harmony Arts Festival Readings in the Park series, the talented local memoirist will talk about her life as a writer and the art of memoir writing, and will also share stories about her enigmatic family, her unconventional upbringing and her unique life journey.

Persian Book Club

Thursday, August 17, 2 – 4 p.m., Welsh Hall East

 

Read and discuss classical and contemporary Persian literary prose. Participants must be fluent in Persian. Led by Feloor Talebi.

Gordon Smith: Serigraphs

Through to August 21, Art Gallery

 

For seven decades, Gordon Smith has explored the mediums of painting, printmaking and sculpting with zeal and intensity. A key figure in the history of Modernist painting in Canada, and long-time resident of West Vancouver, Smith counts the Order of Canada and the Governor General's Award among his many accolades. 

 

The serigraphs he creates with long-time collaborator and printmaker Marius Soska complement his painting, collage and photographic practices.

We will get you set up to start scanning your photos, film or slides in this one-hour lesson. Bring sample photographs and we'll show you how to use our high-quality scanners in the Multimedia Lab.

Storytime at John Lawson Park

Wednesdays, August 2 – 30, 10:30 – 11 a.m.,

John Lawson Park


A chance for families to hear stories, sing songs and learn new fingerplays and rhymes. Whenever possible, librarians will let you know how to modify an activity for babies, toddlers and preschoolers. Children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver. 

 

This event is weather-permitting. If it is raining, we will have storytime at the Library.

 


 

Summer Family Storytime

Honouring Reconciliation, Hearing the Truth: Reading Circles

Starting September 19, 2017

 

 

This fall, the Library will be offering Reading Circles where we will explore Bev Sellars’ frank and poignant memoir, They Called Me Number One, in which she shares her personal account of her residential school experience and eloquently articulates her own path to healing.

 

Library staff will facilitate each Reading Circle discussion to expand our understanding of local Indigenous history, impacts of colonialism and its ongoing effects on Indigenous peoples.

 

Book Club packages will have a reading guide and an Indigenous history guide of information about local Coast Salish peoples and places.

The Friends of the Library are great champions of the West Vancouver Memorial Library. We are active volunteers and quiet supporters working together to enrich Library programs, collections and services. 

 

The next Friends of the Library meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 27 from 12:30 – 2 p.m. in Welsh Hall East. New members are always welcome!
