June means spending as much time as we can in the great outdoors. Your Library is no different, and this summer you'll find our new Pop-Up Library at festivals, farmers markets and other community events. With weather this nice, we're bringing the Library to you.

Authors in Our Community – The Painting
Wednesday, June 25, 7 p.m., Welsh Hall West

The Painting is the second book in the Detective Kelly O’Brian series by Geoffrey Tigg. This time, O’Brian gets caught up in an investigation off the coast of Bowen Island, leading her to a closed case from 15 years earlier.
 

Persian Book Club
Thursday, June 19, 2 p.m., Elizabeth Musto Room

Read and discuss classical and contemporary Persian literary prose. Participants must be fluent in Persian. Led by Feloor Talebi.

Vagabond Opera

This Portland-based neo-cabaret ensemble puts a playful, modern spin on their eclectic repertoire of gypsy swing, Balkan beats, Klezmer, Parisian hot jazz, and yes, opera. Doors open at 7 p.m. Come early for best seating! Refreshments provided by the Friends of the Library. Presented by North Shore Jazz/Vancouver International Jazz Festival.

Music in Hollywood with Michael Conway Baker
Thursday, June 5, 10:30 a.m., Welsh Hall

Join this local award-winning composer for his entertaining series on music for the movies. The guest performer this session will be cellist Marina Hasselberg.

Supported by a generous bequest from the estate of Robert Leslie Welsh, through the West Vancouver Memorial Library Foundation.

Cultural Revival
Thursday June 5, 12:30 p.m.

A showcase of works by young First Nations artists of the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre’s (SLCC) Aboriginal Youth Ambassador Program, including beadworks, carvings, paintings and weavings in both traditional and contemporary styles.

Join us at 12:30 p.m. for a blessing and traditional welcome from the Squamish and Lil’wat Nations.

Read-To-Me Club | Pre-Readers

Join a club designed for parents with children who cannot yet read independently. Keep a record of the reading you have shared in a special booklet and drop in for weekly stickers, stamps and reading suggestions.

Teen Reading Club | Grades 7 – 12

Designed especially for teen readers, this club offers a prize for every third book read.

Early Years and Kids

Storyhouse Family Drop-In |
Birth – 6Y
Wednesday, June 4, 12 p.m., Storyhouse

Families with children aged six and under are invited to come and celebrate learning in a fun, relaxed environment led by a qualified Early Childhood Educator. A snack for children will be provided. This is a drop-in event and space is limited. Storyhouse doors open at 11:45 a.m.

Comedy Writing Workshop with Dan Bar-El | 11 – 13Y
​July 7, 10:30 a.m., Storyhouse

A lively, fun hour-and a-half of learning how to think and write “funnier”. Participants will cover the basic rules of comedy, how to brainstorm ideas and formulate a joke, how language breaks down as a tool and serves humour, the importance of lateral thinking and ways to change your perspective of the world around you. Don’t forget to bring a pencil and notebook. Registration is required and begins Monday, June 23.

Book Buddies | 6 – 12 Y
Thursdays, July 3 – 24, 10:30 a.m., Welsh Hall

Children will play literacy games and practice their reading skills with teen volunteers during this one hour program. Kids must be school-aged and able to read some English on their own in order to register for the program. Program runs for four weeks. Registration is required and begins Monday, June 16.

Easy as Pi: Introduction to Computer Programming | 9 –12Y
Tuesdays, July 8 – 29, 3:30 p.m., Computer Training Room

In this hands-on program, kids will enjoy learning about computer programming using the Raspberry Pi, a credit-card sized computer, and creating their own computer games and projects from scratch. Program runs for four weeks. Registration is by lottery and runs from June 2 – 23. Contact the Youth Department at wvmlyouth@westvanlibrary.ca or 604.925.7408. Participants will be notified of the results of the draw by June 27.
