Greater Sudbury's 2021 Canada Summer Games Bid Update

Thank you to the Greater Sudbury community for supporting our 2021 Canada Summer Games bid! We would like to congratulate Niagara Region as the successful host, and we are confident they will do Ontario proud.

The announcement was made on Thursday, March 30th at Hart House in Toronto and Staff and Bid Committee members were in attendance to hear the announcement live.

Locally, a viewing party in the IMAX Theatre at Science North was organized by Staff and Bid Committee Members with close to 100 in attendance.

Although the end result wasn't quite what was hoped for, the relationships built and experience gained are invaluable and will translate into future hosting opportunities.  A debrief is being scheduled with the Canada Games Council over the coming weeks.  There was also a Bid Committee Appreciation event, held on Tuesday, April 11th just before the Council meeting.

Staff also attended the CSTA Sport Event Congress in Ottawa. This is the largest annual gathering of rights holders, community tourism professionals, event suppliers, event management firms, and elected officials that are connected to the over $6 billion sport tourism industry in Canada.  Numerous contacts were made and several warm leads were gained from Curling Canada, Canoe Kayak Canada, Canadian Blind Hockey Association and Diving Canada.

Bid Proposals

Working closely with a local bid committee, the Sudbury District Girls Hockey Association and Ontario Women’s Hockey Association, a bid was submitted to Hockey Canada for the 2019 Esso Cup National Female Midget Championship.

There were many other opportunities and events pursued during this time including the Canadian National Marathon Canoe Racing Championship and Professional Golfers Association of Northern Ontario Championship, both of which were secured and will be held in August.  Staff are currently evaluating the potential to submit a bid for the 2019 Everest Canadian Seniors Curling Championship
