Sudbury Tourism Receives the 2018 Tourism Northern Ontario Industry Leader Award

Sudbury Tourism received the 2018 Tourism Northern Ontario Industry Leader Award in the category of Workforce Development and Training. The award was in recognition of developing and hosting a series of Customer Service FAM (familiarization) Tours in 2018 designed to educate tourism partners’ front-line staff. The goal of each tour was to showcase attractions, local establishments, new businesses and “hidden gems” throughout Greater Sudbury. By sharing their experiences and recommending all of the best #ThingstoDoinSudbury to colleagues, guests, customers, friends and family, FAM Tours essentially transform attendees into a new wave of tourism ambassadors.

Municipal Accommodation Tax (MAT)

As part of the 2017 Provincial Budget, the Province of Ontario granted municipalities the authority to implement a tax on short-term accommodations.  At its meeting of February 6, 2018, Greater Sudbury Council directed staff to proceed with the development of a 4% Municipal Accommodation Tax.
The 4% fee will be applied to accommodations of less than 30 consecutive days and includes accommodations at hotels, motels, motor hotels, lodges, inns, resorts, bed and breakfasts, or other establishment providing lodging including those sold through online platforms.

Half of the net revenue will be used to promote and grow the tourism industry in Greater Sudbury through The City of Greater Sudbury's Community Development Corporation (operating as the GSDC) and its Tourism Development Committee. For more information and resources visit

www.greatersudbury.ca/MAT

Tourism Development Committee (TDC)

The Tourism Development Committee currently consists of two GSDC board members and 5 industry representatives. The primary objective for the investment of the net proceeds of the MAT funds is to increase hotel occupancy rates and bring more visitors to the city.

The Tourism Development Committee will be leading the development of a five-year Tourism Development Strategy and an annual work plan which identifies areas of priority and targets for investments.

Tourism Excellence North (TEN) Cycling Best Practice Mission

Sudbury Tourism staff participated in the Tourism Excellence North (TEN) Cycling Best Practice Mission in Quebec, October 10-12. The mission featured regional and community based best practices related to cycling infrastructure, way-finding, marketing and promotions. With the Ontario Cycle Tourism Strategy, TNO support for cycle tourism product development, local investment in infrastructure, and the interest from our local clubs, there is more to come in making Sudbury a cycle-friendly destination.

Tourism staff are working with the Transportation Department to determine joint projects to move cycling/cycle tourism forward. For information on making your business more cycling friendly, check out Ontario By Bike's certification program or contact Dana.Jennings@Sudbury.ca.

Sudbury Tourism & Culture - Tools for Raising Awareness of Greater Sudbury as a Tourism Destination

Dana Jennings and Trisha Lavigne were pleased to meet with members of the Uptown Community Action Network on October 17th. The topic of discussion was how we might collaborate on raising awareness of existing resources, including an event calendar, in order to further their goal of informing the community on the great things you can do in Greater Sudbury.

The presentation covered our existing FREE resource tools which included our Offers and Promotions page as well as our existing Events Calendar, new blog portal, current activities and statistics. >>> View presentation

Over the next several months we will continue to transition over to a new web address that will replace sudburytourism.ca entirely with DiscoverSudbury.ca, as we hope this will hold more appeal for a local audience of Sudburians who otherwise don't access a tourism site for information or upcoming events (many of whom may also be entertaining their friends and family here in the community). This approach will also be aligning with other tourism destination messaging across Ontario and beyond, hopefully enticing more people to #DiscoverSudbury. For more information contact trisha.lavingne@greatersudbury.ca

The City of Greater Sudbury is continuing to work with the Downtown Sudbury BIA on various options to address the loss parking and updates will be provided as details become available.
