Regional Partnerships

Sudbury Tourism, in partnership with Northeastern Ontario Tourism, participated in an Ontario Tourism Sales Mission to Quebec. Our participation provided Sudbury Tourism with the opportunity to maintain and grow key relationships with Group Tour operators in Quebec and other tourism industry colleagues, thus helping to raise the profile of both Northeastern Ontario and Sudbury within this sector. Participation in the mission also assists efforts to ensure awareness and connection with our tourism colleagues within the province.

Bid Proposals

As part of the bid evaluation process regarding the recent Bid Opportunity launched by the Canada Games Council for the 2021 Canada Summer Games, staff coordinated a meeting on Friday, April 1st to determine the level of community interest amongst Summer Games-related sports groups, community organizations, tourism partners and other stakeholders in bringing this event to Greater Sudbury. With 29 people in attendance, the meeting was very positive, and stakeholders were in agreement that the City should move forward in exploring this bid opportunity.

TAP Resources notified Sudbury Tourism on April 8th, 2016 that Sudbury's Bid package for the Little NHL was very well received and much appreciated by the tournament organizers. The next part of the bid process will have TAP Resources representative, Ms. Tuesday Johnson-MacDonald, travelling to Sudbury Friday, April 29th to Saturday, April 30th to conduct site visits of the arenas and hotels who were part of the bid. This is very promising for Sudbury and we will continue to provide updates on the results of the process as they are available.

Sudbury Tourism hosted Suzanne Hoehner from Jonview Canada Inc. (one of the largest travel trade companies in Canada) to lead a session for tourism partners who have an interest in developing their group tour and international travel potential. We were also joined by Gaby Kotz, Marketing & Trade Consultant (Europe) from Ontario Tourism Marketing Partnership Corporation (OTMPC). This session gave partners the opportunity to learn about the market potential, how offerings are packaged and sold from the suppliers to passengers, and what the expectations are when operating in this market.

Film Industry

We've had tons of filming in our city and so far the trailers look great and the economic impact is felt across the community so a big thank you to those who helped make that happen! As per the direction of Council, CGS staff have been working together to address filming requests in a proactive manner so we can continue to build a film-friendly reputation, while we also ensure we're balancing the needs of both citizens and those of all departmental operations.
