City of Greater Sudbury Announces:

 

Non-Profit Groups Eligible to Apply for Local Transit and Transportation Grant

 

Greater Sudbury Transit offers financial support to eligible not-for-profit, charitable and community

groups in need of transportation to a single local event or program.  Read more...

 

On Friday February 3, WestJet launched service between the Greater Sudbury Airport and Toronto Pearson International Airport. The service will be offered by Westjet’s regional airline, WestJet Encore, which operates a 78 seat Bombardier Q400 and will begin service with one daily round trip flight and increased service to three daily flights in May 2017.

 

 


 

 

 

 

Tourism staff assisted with and sponsored the Television production called À fond de train which aired its 60th episode, filmed in Sudbury, on February 4th. The show is targeted at youth and young families. Read more....

 

This month staff are working with two film productions shooting in Sudbury. Grim Trigger is a feature film by local producer Jason Jallet. Producer Mark Montefiore, has returned to host the third season of Letterkenny in Sudbury after having seen great success with the first two seasons here.

 

Cardinal, a series shot in Sudbury in winter 2016, premiered on CTV on January 25th. CTV also featured interviews with cast, crew and producers who spoke about the benefits Sudbury offers as a film destination.

Monthly Tourism Marketing Partnership Meetings:

 

 

 

We have changed how we do our monthly meetings. We are now focusing the meetings on specific topics pertaining to marketing plans and campaign implementation for our key markets. Click here for the planned 2017 meeting schedule.

 

 

 

 

February's meeting focused on Sporting Event Attraction and Planning, and was held at Countryside Arena on February 9th.

 

The next monthly meeting is scheduled for March 9th and will focus on Sudbury's Media Profile - Owned vs. Earned and Value of Travel Media. Venue to be determined.

Other Bid Proposals

 

A letter of intent to host has been submitted for the Economic Developers Association of Canada (EDAC) conference 2018-2020, and staff have confirmed the 2017 Canaqua Sudbury SwimRun Challenge as a new event for Greater Sudbury.

 

Closing the 2016 year, Tourism Staff have secured and/or coordinated future events that will bring in more than 2,000 delegates, generating close to 4,000 hotel room nights and producing a potential of more than $1,000,000 in projected economic impact.  These numbers are based on 2013 data prepared by the Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport.

December Labour 

Force Survey

 

The December Labour Force Survey was released recently. Greater Sudbury's unemployment rate increased to 8.1%, up from 7.5% in November. There were 1200 jobs lost, decreasing the number of people employed in our city to 82,700. The participation rate is 64.1%.

 

The unemployment rate for Ontario increased slightly to 6.4% (up from 6.3% in November). Canada's unemployment rate increased to 6.9% (up from 6.8% in November).
