Event Marketplaces

Tourism staff attended the Annual Conference of the Canadian Society of Association Executives (CSAE) in Toronto in late October, with the intention of making connections that could lead to future meetings and convention opportunities in Greater Sudbury.

Tourism staff will attend the Professional Convention Management Association’s Canadian Innovation Conference in St. John’s, Newfoundland in November. This innovative, education-focused conference is one of the premier events that attracts meeting and event professionals in the marketplace of meetings, conventions, seminars, exhibits and tradeshow opportunities.

Arts & Culture

2016 Cultural Forum Invitation & Update

The third annual Cultural Forum is scheduled to take place on November 23rd at Imagine Cinema, the new downtown luxury movie theatre, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Based on positive feedback of prior forums this edition has been expanded to a full day with invitations that are being circulated to funding agencies, governmental partners, City representatives and arts, culture and heritage stakeholders. Click the image above to secure your invitation.

The Forum will feature a panel discussion on creative placemaking as well as peer-to-peer breakout sessions on six different themes. The Mayor will be speaking on behalf of Council and Dave Paquette will be speaking as a representative of the GSDC Board.

Arts & Culture Grant Program

The online grant portal went live on November 3rd with the deadline for submissions of January 12, 2017.  This change (two months earlier than in previous years), enables applicants to plan their activities and budgets earlier, with some of them having events during the busy summer months.

Recruitment of volunteers for the two Arts & Culture Grant Juries is underway.  In addition to the Greater Sudbury Development Corporation (GSDC) Board representation, fourteen community members are required to sit on the Project Jury and the Operating Jury.

Film Industry

Imagine Cinemas, which opened a six-screen theatre in the Rainbow Centre earlier this spring, has announced that as of November 4th it will be licensed to sell alcohol, including local Stack beer.

Two film and television productions are shooting in Sudbury over the next couple months.  Indian Horse is a feature film about a young Indigenous boy in the residential school system, and is based off the novel by the same name written by Richard Wagamese.  The Food Market is a six-part television series where Sudbury will play Montreal in a gritty urban crime drama.  It is produced by Mark Montefiore, who had brought half a dozen other productions to Sudbury over the last three years.
