2014 Sudbury Tourism Forum

Plans are well under way for the annual Sudbury Tourism Forum, taking place as a morning event on Tuesday, October 21st, with exciting guest speakers and important updates on tourism sector development.  The event is being hosted as part of Small Business Week in order to leverage cooperative marketing opportunities and bring Tourism to the fore as an important economic driver for the economy.  The theme for this year’s forum is Tuned Up: A new look at Sudbury Tourism.

Formal invitations will be emailed out to Sudbury Tourism Partners in the very near future.

The 15th Annual Bridges to Better Business Conference is an information-packed week that will bring together small to mid-size businesses from the City of Greater Sudbury and leave entrepreneurs feeling rejuvenated and empowered for success!

Touch Screen Kiosks Pilot Project





Three of the web-based touch screen kiosks being developed by Sudbury Tourism for this pilot project are now in place at the Airport, Science North and Ramakko’s.  Below are the kiosk statistics for the month of mid-August to mid-September.  The most popular category is once again Attractions, with 247 “touches” during this timeframe.







                                                   

 





















Highway Billboards

To celebrate the new Tourism brand and logo, with the help of the Web Marketing Team, Tourism staff arranged for the replacement of billboards at highways 17E, 17W, 144 and 69South.  With two billboard locations on the south end highway corridor, we have utilized one of the sites with imagery that showcases Sudbury as "Education Capital of the North", featuring our three post-secondary educational facilities at Laurentian University, Cambrian College and Collège Boréal.  



Leisure & Packaging

Throughout the month of August, Sudbury Tourism partnered with several different organizations to offer new packages and products through the online reservation system. These include Art Gallery of Sudbury Festival of the Seven event tickets and hotel packages; a Welcome Students Package for post-secondary students and their families through the Learning City initiative; and a ticket bundle for Science North Play All Day Passports and Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat admission, called the Grrreat White North Journey, developed in partnership with Science North, Northeastern Ontario Tourism and the Ontario Tourism Marketing Partnership Corporation (OTMPC). 


Staff have developed a new Halloween package with the Dynamic Earth Tunnel of Terror/Pumpkinferno and the Northern Ontario Railroad Museum and Heritage Centre Terror Train 6077. This will be available as a ticket-only combo or with accommodations.

Pumpkinferno and The Zombie Tunnel of Terror takes place at Dynamic Earth on weekends only from October 10th to 26th.

The Tunnel of Terror event takes place on site at the Northern Ontario Railroad Museum and Heritage Centre in Capreol beginning with the Scare Fair on September 27th, and every Friday-Sunday during the month of October, plus October 30th.

In addition, Sudbury Tourism acted as the exclusive online ticket outlet for the 2014 Jazz Sudbury Festival, and will once again be hosting online ticket sales for the Regional Business Centre's Small Business Week events.

Meetings, Conventions & Sport Tourism

The 7th Annual Downtown Sudbury Ribfest, supported by the Tourism event support program, was widely considered a success despite the rain. Dowtown Sudbury estimates attendance at 30,000 people. Tourism staff approached 20 businesses and organizations who agreed to survey patrons over Ribfest weekend, with many indicating that they saw higher levels of foot traffic.

A letter of intent was submitted to host the Economic Developers Association of Canada (EDAC) Conference in 2016, 2017 or 2018, with additional event bids in development. Staff appreciated the assistance of a number of community partners who provided timely support and information for these bids.

Greater Sudbury will be hosting the Rogers Hometown Hockey event on December 7, 2014.  Along with 24 other communities across Canada, our community has been chosen for the inaugural Rogers Hometown Hockey Tour, and staff are working on logistics for hockey-themed festivities, including outdoor viewing parties, kids activities, local bands and entertainment, stories and features of Sudbury-related NHL players, all culminating in a live Sunday night broadcast of the pre-game show hosted by Ron McLean from the Sportsnet Mobile Studio in downtown Sudbury on the 7th (prior to the Vancouver-Ottawa game that evening).

The Market

Attendance has been solid at The Market over the summer, with September numbers already up when compared to August, and the most recent Saturday, (September 6th) resulting in over 680 people visiting the site alone.  
 
Staff have been in contact with several local antique sellers and a pilot Antique Market is now in the works for two Sundays, October 5th and 12th.with antiques, collectibles and livestock displays.

Regional Partnerships

In partnership with Carte Blanche Films, Ontario Tourism Marketing Partnership Corp. and Tourism Northern Ontario, Tourism and Economic Development staff are collaborating on the filming of Hard Rock Medical.  This reciprocal effort will provide support to the production company while resulting in innovative product placement and the development of b-roll footage of iconic northern landscapes and destinations for this next season of the popular TVO television series.  The footage will be available for Tourism and Economic Development for direct usage and the associated social media placements on HRM outlets will drive traffic to tourism sites. 


Accessible Tourism Workshops

The Accessible Tourism Workshops are being presented by TIAO in partnership with Tourism Northern Ontario and with assistance of Sudbury Tourism staff. as part of a commitment with the Ministry of Economic Development, Employment and Infrastructure to promote accessible tourism by using best practices in the industry. Attendees will learn about accessible tourism through expert speakers and a panel sharing examples from the local area. In anticipation for Ontario's Accessible Tourism Award at the Ontario Tourism Summit, the regional finalists will be recognized at each workshop.

This half-day workshop will be held October 15th in Sudbury. Read more.

Learning City Initiative

One of the Greater Sudbury Learning City's most successful initiatives to date, the Learning Spark play-based learning festival is taking shape with the help of many community partners and supporters, and will be taking place in Bell Park on Saturday, September 27th.  This innovative event encourages preschool and elementary school students and their families to explore unstructured play as an important method of learning with a diversity of themed activity areas for building, water play, sand, technology, dress-up and more.  The Early Childhood Education faculty and students from Collège Boréal and Cambrian College will be onsite as trained volunteers and the organization of the event is being co-managed with the help of partners at Child & Community Resources (CCR).

Arts & Culture

The Théâtre du Nouvel-Ontario has been nominated as one of six organizations across the province to receive the Premier’s Award for Artistic Excellence.  This is TNO’s third nomination, a reflection of its well-established role in producing high caliber theatre.  Finalists will be announced in September. 

Northern Ontario Film Studio hosted an outdoor film screening of Be My Valentine and A Little Bit Zombie on August 15th.  Both films were shot locally and proceeds from the screenings went to charity. 

Cinéfest has been underway this month, with its 2014 lineup featuring Sudbury-filmed Lost After Dark, as well as several others shot in Northern Ontario.  The film festival ran from September 13th through to the 21st and hosted a pan-northern industry forum on September 19th. 

Sudbury welcomes three film productions that have gone to camera in September:

Unearthing, filming September 10th – 28th
Holiday Help, filming September 8th – 26th
Music to my Ears, filming September 24th – October 9th

Staff have been providing assistance through location scouting and working with multiple departments for permits.  Two of the productions will likely involve intermittent traffic interruptions in the downtown core.
 


Invitations will be circulated in September to arts and culture stakeholders, inviting them to participate in the Greater Sudbury Cultural Plan Forum on the afternoon of October 21st at the N’Swakamok Native Friendship Centre following the Tourism Forum planned for that morning at the Days Inn. 




Musicians and organizations will be featured at The Market as part of the Culture Days activities on September 27th and 28th (www.culturedays.ca).   

Staff presented at the United Way funders’ forum on September 16th and 17th to provide prospective applicants with an overview of the Arts & Culture Grants.  A second forum is in the works for October.
