What's New




Municipal Accommodations Tax (MAT) Update


As part of the 2017 Provincial Budget, the Province of Ontario granted municipalities the authority to implement a tax on transient accommodation, including room rentals of less than 30 consecutive days. At its meeting of February 27, 2018, Greater Sudbury Council directed staff to proceed with the development of a 4% Municipal Accommodation Tax (MAT) for transient accommodation within Greater Sudbury, with a projected implementation date of July 1, 2018. At the February 6, 2018 Finance and Administration Committee, Council received a report regarding the Transient Accommodation Tax. It was recommended at that time to implement the tax effective July 1, 2018.

Thanks in part to the input received from the industry and in recognition of the needs of the accommodation sector, the implementation date was moved to September 1, 2018.


Eligible transient accommodators doing business and/or facilitating business transactions within the City of Greater Sudbury will be obliged to collect and remit a 4% Municipal Accommodation Tax on all room revenue sold for overnight accommodation. The tax will apply to hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts and short-term home rentals such as those sold through AirBNB and other online travel sites, within the municipality.

In accordance with provincial regulations, half of the MAT net revenue will be provided to the Greater Sudbury Development Corporation (GSDC) as a non-profit corporation with a Tourism mandate, for the express purposes of promoting and growing the tourism industry in Greater Sudbury.  The other half of the net revenue generated will go to the City of Greater Sudbury to use in accordance with Council direction.

The GSDC will be responsible for the reinvestment of these net proceeds into the Tourism sector of Greater Sudbury.  The primary objective for the investment of these dollars will be to increase hotel occupancy rates and bring more visitors to the city each year.


With the implementation of the Municipal Accommodation Tax (MAT) coming into effect Saturday, September 1, 2018, we understand that staff and guests may have questions. As such, we have developed the following materials: 

  • A rack card developed with your staff training needs in mind. These cards can be used as a quick reference for key questions from guests;
  • A business card to provide guests with should they have additional questions about the (MAT) which directs them to contact the City of Greater Sudbury.

Fall/ Winter Visitor Guide 2018/19 – The Ultimate Resource Tool 

The 2018-19 Fall / Winter Visitor Guides are now being distributed throughout the city. With a print run of 20,000 copies, distribution of the guides include 20+ rack locations throughout the city, numerous tourist information outlets across Ontario, to local event organizers for out-of-town participants, to trade shows and conferences outside of the community, and by request via e-mail and phone. We have already distributed an impressive 6,780 guides in the first two weeks alone!

TV Monitor Sudbury Tourism Slides Available

Sudbury Tourism is providing digital slides with visitor information for display at the Greater Sudbury Airport. The slides are updated weekly at the airport, but can be updated on a monthly basis. These engaging image slides are easily uploaded to smart TVs or monitors that are compatible for main lobbies, restaurants or gathering places.

Travel Media Association of Canada


Sudbury Tourism was pleased to attend the Nations conference TMAC (Travel media association of Canada). 



This conference provided us with an excellent opportunity to leverage the Sudbury Tourism partnership resources by providing further exposure for Greater Sudbury and its tourism offerings and experiences to both national and international audiences.


Each travel writer, in turn, had an opportunity to reach thousands of travellers and consumers interested in visiting Greater Sudbury.




Kelly Bonnell, Major Events Development Officer, was nominated by TMAC Ontario Chapter chairs to become a TMAC board member. An election was held at the TMAC conference and Kelly was voted in to be part of the National Ontario Chapter of Travel Media Association of Canada. This will be a 2-year term on the board. Congratulations Kelly! 

Greater Sudbury plays host to Professional Event Planners (CanSPEP) Conference

On July 25 and 26, Greater Sudbury welcomed members of the Canadian Society of Professional Event Planners to the community as host of their annual conference, being held for the first time in Greater Sudbury.

Attracting conferences such as this will expand the city's opportunities to host events, attract business and create a more robust portfolio as a prime destination for business professionals.

"Greater Sudbury has so much to offer and we are proud to be a destination for friends and families, adventure seekers, cultural explorers and savvy business travelers and we want to continue to grow" said Greater Sudbury Mayor Brian Bigger. "We are excited to host the Canadian Society of Professional Event Planners and look forward to showcasing to this group and the world why we are an ideal destination for future conferences and events."

CanSPEP members visited several of the city's marquee event venues while attending the four-day conference. "We are thrilled to bring our Annual AGM and Conference to Greater Sudbury this year," said CanSPEP president and professional event planner Patricia Pearson. "Our members will unearth their entrepreneurial success and experience and discover what the great city of Greater Sudbury can offer to their clients."

"This was a chance for Greater Sudbury to showcase our beautiful community as it stands now, and start sharing our excitement for what the future holds for this city, "," said Ian Wood, director of economic development for the City of Greater Sudbury. "

The CanSPEP Association chose Greater Sudbury for this year's annual conference through a competitive bid process, succeeding Charlottetown, PEI, as the 2017 host community. Attraction and retention of meetings, conventions and business travel form an important component of the City's annual tourism marketing and promotional efforts, and aligns with the Greater Together Corporate Strategic Plan's priority of attracting more events and conferences to Greater Sudbury.

The Canadian Society of Professional Event Planners (CanSPEP) is a growing association of independent professional event planner entrepreneurs who collectively produce thousands of meetings, conferences, and events across Canada each year. The annual spend influence of CanSPEP members for 2017 was over $80 million and the Association's membership actively represents 349 clients each year, including corporate, association, government, non-profit/charity, incentives businesses and other programs.

Killarney Tourism Summit



Tourism Staff were thrilled to attend the Killarney Tourism Summit on May 29th at the stunningly beautiful Killarney Mountain Lodge. Meredith Armstrong, Manager of Tourism & Culture, presented on Sudbury's Tourism approach, regional best practices and opportunities to work together to attract more visitor to the area. Further discussion and collaboration are planned for 2019, focusing toward an international travel trade marketplace called Rendezvous Canada which will be held in Toronto.



Canadian Geoparks Conference

Tourism Staff attended the first Canadian Global Geoparks conference in Ottawa June 3rd-6th. As a member of the community group exploring the opportunity to have Sudbury designated a UNESCO Geopark, staff has been working with community stakeholders as well as staff from Dynamic Earth and Science North in supporting this project, providing expertise in the economic and tourism development opportunities and representing City priorities.




The 2019 International Plowing Match is coming... Are you ready?


Get Ready!  


The Tourism Team met with members of the organizing committee for the 2019 International Plowing Match, taking place in Verner, ON from September 17th to 21st, 2019.   The group also made a presentation to the Tourism partners at the June meeting. The Tourism section will be working both regionally and with local stakeholders to establish a presence at the match and provide the 70,000-80,000 attendees with a number of reasons to stay in and visit Sudbury throughout the week-long event.

The Junction

The Junction is the shared site for the new Library / Art Gallery and Greater Sudbury Convention / Performance Centre. The Library / Art Gallery will provide vital public space for people to gather and connect, to learn and to share ideas, and to inspire creativity. The tier three Convention / Performance Centre will be a unique multi-use convention centre and performance arts facility to be located in Downtown Sudbury.  Stay tuned!
