Labour Force Survey

The July Labour Force Survey was released August 5th and things appear to be improving for Greater Sudbury. The number of people in the labour force increased by 700 and the number of people employed increased by 900. There are 81,400 people employed, the highest level since January when employment was down to 78,700.

Our community had an unemployment rate of 8.1% in July, down from 8.4% in June. Our rate is still significantly higher than the province (6.4%) and the nation (6.9%).

Meetings, Conventions & Sport Tourism

Canada Summer Games 2021 Bid Update:

On July 20th a meeting was held with the various community groups, sport clubs, and stakeholders to prepare for the Technical Review Committee visit confirmed on August 26th.  The agenda for the TRC visit is confirmed and over 9 hours close to 20 venues will be visited!  There will be a media briefing held on August 16th to build awareness of the bid and the TRC visit within the community.  Official Canada Summer Games posters are being distributed throughout the community and they are also being displayed on many of the digital media boards throughout the city.  We are hoping our Partners will post these prominently at their facilities to assist in this campaign!  The shortlist for Phase 2 is has been changed to September 9th.

Other Bid Updates:

Our bid to host FONOM in May 2019 was successful!  This 3 day conference will bring 250 delegates from all over Northern Ontario consisting of municipal politicians, senior municipal and government staff.   This event will be held at the Holiday Inn and planning will be ongoing.

The Little NHL has announced that they will be going to Mississauga for 2017. While the outcome was not in our favour, the bid process was a positive experience for the City, with the collaborated effort of staff in Arenas and Tourism combined with the support and commitment from all of our tourism partners. Staff will be in close contact with the Little NHL for future opportunities to host the tournament, and other related events, here in our community.
