Retractions of scientific papers have grown ten-fold in the past decade. Dr. Ivan Oransky will discuss the reasons for this increase, whether fraud is on the rise, and the growth of post-publication peer review.

Bumps in the Road in Graduate Supervision: A conflict resolution discussion

February 7, 10:00am-12:00pm

The supervisory experience can present professors with many challenges including conflict, and at times, ineffective resolution of such conflict. This workshop is designed to help supervisors build communication with supervisees and learn how to effectively prevent and manage conflict in their relationships.

The research paper: Engaging students with the writing process

March 16, 1:30-4:00pm

The research (term) paper is a core assignment at McGill, allowing students to reflect on meaningful questions and develop their own scholarly voices. In this workshop, we will explore how to design assignments that engage students and encourage them to develop their critical thinking skills.

Want to receive valuable feedback from your students during the term while it is still possible to make adjustments? Effective strategies include administering an online survey through myCourses, using Polling @ McGill, and having an in-class student-led forum.

 

myCourses Tip: Flagging Assignment Submissions

When reviewing assignments submitted through myCourses, you can "flag" particular submissions. Flags can be used to note files that may need further review or were noteworthy. You could ask your TAs to flag assignments that they would like a second opinion on. It is then possible to filter by flagged assignments. Students will not see that their submission has been flagged.

Polling @ McGill: Sign up for the Winter semester

Instructors interested in using Polling @ McGill for the Winter semester must request licenses for their courses; please see the “Getting Started for Instructors” section of the Polling @ McGill website. This system, available as of the Fall 2016 semester at no charge to students and instructors, allows students to respond to questions from a personal device (smartphone, tablet, or laptop). As a reminder, physical clickers are no longer supported for in-class use.
